Upping Your G&T

As the weather warms, it's time for refreshing cocktails. This means bubbles and while we're at it, why not dress up a G&T.

I'll overview the game plan in this video. Details are below it. Thanks or bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler for this recipe.

If you're ready to dive in, here is how you'll make the tincture

  • Combine and stir 6 grams of ground cinchona and 150 ml of vodka

  • Run this mixture through a coffee filter. It will be shelf-stable.

What you need for your aromatic syrup is listed out below. Note: gentian is a bit of a wild card. If you're newer to bittering agents, you may want to cut back on it a bit. FYI, you can likely find citric acid at your grocery store.

Once you've assembled the ingredients for your syrup, simmer them for 20 minutes and then strain them. Combine this with ~3/4 oz of your tincture. You're not ready to build a G&T.

Add 2 oz of gin and a 1/2 oz of your quinine syrup to an ice-filled glass.

Top that with 1.5 - 2 oz of cold club soda. Stir gently and garnish with lime.

Here's to the summer.
